Frances was born in Edinburgh, grew up in Sheffield, and read English at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. In 2006 she received an Eric Gregory Award and her critically acclaimed first collection, Public Dreams (Picador, 2007) was shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize, the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and the Jerwood-Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. Her second collection, Disinformation (Picador, 2015), further cemented her reputation as a leading writer of her generation. Frances has had equal success as a prose writer and her latest publication, The Voice in My Ear (Jonathan Cape, 2020), is a collection of her short stories. It includes “Broderie Anglaise”, which was shortlisted for the 2015 BBC National Short Story Award. Frances lives in Northumberland and teaches Creative Writing at the University of Manchester.
