The 39th John Hewitt International Summer School is on its way! You’ll find us in Armagh from 27th – 31st July.
We are delighted to offer bursaries as financial support to the island’s aspiring and emerging writers who, for one reason or another, would otherwise not be able to attend. Full bursaries include accommodation, and half-bursaries without accommodation are available to those from the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Council Area.
There will be opportunities for professional and creative development during the week, including a panel on self-publishing, talks about writing from established authors, a creative writing course of your choice, the opportunity to read your work at our Creative Writing Showcase at Market Place Theatre or Abbey Lane Theatre, and networking with other attendees.
Previous bursary students have gone on to become published writers, lead workshops, host their own live and online author events, and have been invited to read at poetry/literature festivals – others have come back to volunteer for us each year at the JHISS, or are employed within the literary arts.
Could that be YOU? Apply here!
We are offering both full and half bursary awards.
A full sponsored bursary award includes:
– B&B for five nights in a single room, within walking distance of the venue.
– Free tickets to all programmed events each day, unless otherwise specified.
– A free creative writing workshop of your choice, which includes 6 hours of tuition over 3 days.
– An invitation to all festival receptions.
– Morning break refreshments Tuesday – Friday.
What do we need from you?
- To be over 18 years old and resident in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland
- Availability to stay in Armagh for the full five nights from 27th – 31st July (for half-bursaries, we request your availability and attendance during programme hours)
- Dedication to attend a minimum 70% of events on our five day programme
- A keen interest in writing/storytelling and a desire to develop as a writer
We welcome applications from aspiring and beginner writers! All we ask for is proof that you take your writing seriously, would like to develop your skills or network, and have a plan for your writing going forward.
Applications close at 5pm on Friday 22nd May.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept late applications. If you have missed the deadline, we’ll happily welcome your application next year!
For any enquires about the JHISS bursary, please contact festival@johnhewittsociety.org.
A final reminder to please not apply unless you are able to stay in Armagh from Monday 27th to Friday 31st of July and can make a commitment to attend a minimum 70% of our programme events. We want our bursaries to make the most of this amazing opportunity!
