We are absolutely thrilled to announce the official launch of the 39th John Hewitt International Summer School.
To mark the occasion, we were honoured to welcome Counsellor Mary O’Dowd, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, alongside an incredible lineup of creatives, patrons, and community leaders who gathered to help us usher in this year’s highly anticipated programme.
The launch event offered a vibrant sneak peek into the creative energy defining this year’s festival. Attendees were treated to:
- Insightful Opening Remarks: Inspiring speeches by Frank Ferguson and Paul McAvinchey set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable week.
- Captivating Readings: Renowned writers Damian Smyth and Sue Divin shared powerful excerpts, reminding us all of the magic of the spoken word.
- Live Music: Armagh’s very own Conchúr White delivered a mesmerising musical performance that perfectly captured the soulful, artistic spirit of the region.

This year, the festival takes a look at the triumphs, trials, and diverse experiences of women throughout history and modern society. Our curated programme of readings, discussions, panel events, and creative workshops proudly welcomes an array of incredible female writers, poets, and thinkers.
From standard-bearers of contemporary Irish literature to boundary-pushing new voices, we are delighted to host Louise Nealon, Sinéad Morrissey, Bernie McQuillan, and many more.

In a world where free expression is increasingly under fire, literature remains a vital act of resilience. We are proud to host the Irish PEN Freedom to Write event, led by internationally renowned Human Rights Lawyer Caoilfhionn Gallagher, KC.
This crucial discussion will address the severe challenges faced by writers living under threat globally, shining a light on why protecting independent voices is more important today than ever before.
