NATIONAL POETRY DAY with poets RUTH CARR and IGGY McGOVERN.

Cardinal Ó Fiaich Memorial Library. 15 Moy Road, Armagh BT61 7LY.

The City Chapter is delighted to once again celebrate National Poetry Day. This year’s event which has the theme of ‘Refuge’ will be held on Thursday 5 October 2023 at 7.30pm in The Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. Poets Iggy McGovern and Ruth Carr make a welcome return to Armagh to read and talk about their poetry for our annual National Poetry Day celebration.

Coleraine born Iggy McGovern is a physicist who has published three collections of poetry, The King of Suburbia in 2005, Safe House in 2010 and The Eyes of Isaac Newtown in 2017. He has been the recipient of several bursaries, residencies and awards including the Glen Dimplex New Writers Award for Poetry in 2006 and the Alexander von Humboldt Stipendium in Physics & Poetry at Erlangen University in 2015. In his own words, his poetry is characterised by form, rhyme and occasional humour.

Belfast native Ruth Carr has also release a number of collections; There is a House in 1999, The Airing Cupboard in 2008 and most recently, Feather and Bone in 2018, which is a response to two enlightened women, Dorothy Wordsworth and Mary Ann McCracken, who both lived long lives, devoted to a more conspicuous brother. She is working on a fourth collection with the title, promising nothing. Ruth has been co-editor of the journal The Honest Ulsterman and editor of The Female Line, and compiled the contemporary women’s fiction section of The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing IV-V and was a founder member of the Word of Mouth women’s poetry collective.

The partnership of the City Chapter is made up of the four libraries in Armagh – Armagh City Library, Armagh Robinson Library, the Cultural Heritage Service Library and Cardinal Ó Fiaich Library and Archive, which is the host for this event. The City Chapter is most grateful to the John Hewitt Society and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for their support for this poetry event.

The City Chapter’s representative, Roddy Hegarty, said, “We are delighted to be hosting the City Chapter’s celebration of National Poetry Day 2023 and to once again welcome both of these wonderful poets back to the city”.
